As a mother of three girls between the ages of seven and 21, it’s not too often that you get some time alone with your husband. We were on our way to the airport for a much needed vacation. We were stopped at a red light—I remember it so clearly because we were celebrating a rare weekend without kids! After ten seconds or so, a police cruiser accelerated into the back of our car and we were pushed forward. The police officer was very nice, but he did admit that he was totally at fault. My husband thinks that he saw the police officer with his phone in his hand. While we were able to make our flight on time, our trip was ruined as we spent most of it immobile and in pain. Years later, we are still attending physical therapy and trying to strengthen the muscles that were damaged. It’s amazing how a momentary lapse in someone’s attention can lead to years of discomfort.
